I sent off my SR Mariner wind speed and direction gauges a week or two ago, an was feeling a little skeptical about them. I mean when a gauge looks like this and has water in it, what do you expect??
Today I got this email from the tech at S.R. Mariner... what happy news!!
<font color="blue"> "Would you believe I actually can salvage the AW-1 you sent?
The electronics and meter movement are fine; it just needs to be cleaned up and refurbished. Each unit will need a new dial face ($10.00 each) and meter case ($20.00 each) plus labor to reassemble/ clean/ test/ calibrate them. The cost should be approximately $135.00 - $160.00 plus S&H.
Please contact me with your decision or if you have nay questions.
Last year, our wind speed and wind diretion device got wet, so we hung it up a little higher. here's a picture of it. did i mention that we are low tech?
I still have an SR gage - the knotmeter. The SR Mariner depthfinder I replaced with a fishfinder. Back a couple of years ago when I was pondering over sending it in and getting it fixed, buying a new one or go the fishfinder route, I checked into the gauges, etc.
The SR Mariner line was discontinued a couple of years ago and they only offer service and parts these days. I do not think they have a model that replaces the SR Mariner line...may have just got out of the business. Back then when they were still selling SR Mariner units, I seem to recall they were very expensive...something like $300-$400. I do not remember exactly. Getting them fixed for ~ $150 seems pricey but then when compared to the cost of a new one...I guess it is not so bad. In the case of depthfinders, there are a lot of options - repair, replace with another depthfinder or with a fishfinder...and countless number of mfrs that make the products.
But in the original post, the repair was for an SR Wind Speed and Direction gauge and there are not as many options for that....perhaps a few mfrs and they are all going to be very expensive....not much gained going with a replacement. So....a repair for $150 sounds great !!
