I am the new owner of a 1978 Catalina 25 . When I received the boat, it was clear that the previous owner had reworked the main sheet layout and attachment points. As I understand it, the original way the Cat 25 was rigged was that the main sheet block attached to the boom at the very end. On my boom there is a stainless plate that is attached to the boom end casting by a large screw. Presently, this plate is facing upward. But I believe it should be facing downward and the main sheet block should attach to it. I at first thought that this plate was for a topping lift but I see that there are two other attachment pins at the end of the boom casting. One I believe is for the clew outhaul and the other is for the topping lift. The problem is, I have not been able to budge the screw holding this stainless steel plate onto the end of the boom. So, two questions:
1. Am I correct in believing that this stainless plate is the proper attachment point for the main sheet? 2. Are the threads on this attachment screw perhaps opposite threads or is it just really seized in there?

The plate/tang should swing freely. You may need to remove the boom end and rework the bolt. I have always assumed there were simply two nuts inside the boom acting as a lock so there could be enough threads for the tang to swivel.
Welcome Steve There are links on the upper left side of this page which you should become familiar with. The one titled Manuals and Brochures (with an M flag) will take you to a series of pages showing schematics of all the parts of your boat as originally built. You can print these as needed or order the manual.

Steve, Is there a block attached at another point under and at the end of the boom? If so, maybe the PO was using the tang fo his/her topping lift. just a thought.
