Well, the survey was today. All in all, I thinkn it was pretty good. The surveyor said the hull is structurally sound. There was a chip in the gelcoat I had seen. The surveyor said it was only cosmetic and nothing really to worry about. The major issues noted were the two lower shrouds. Both were damaged at the lower turnbuckles and one was bent up where it connects to the mast. one is bent to the point, I can't unthread it. I need to price the new shrouds. The last item noted of any concern was the deck hatch. The pop-top white plastic part is cracked. The crack doesn't run through the entire thing but is about 4 inches long. The surveyor again felt that it wasn't a big deal. Something I could worry about repairing next winter or whenever I got to it. The sails are brand new. The surveyor said the furler felt a bit stiff and may need to be lubed a little. The motor started up just fine. The hull looked good.
I had thought the bottom was nothing but the factory barrier coat but I can tell that there was some kind of paint on it. In places it is the nice and slick/smooth barrier coating that I would guess was factory. Other areas there is some kind of paint on top of the coat. It is not flaking and appears to be a hard paint. The boat has been out of the water for about 3 years. I think i can apply ablative over what is there. I need to check into it some more.
Well, The deal is done. We are now Catalina people!!!
We decided to buy it. Closed this afternoon. This is going to really test patience waiting to put it in the water until I do the bottom. I think we are working on that next weekend if the weather will permit. I talked to a couple of people today. They looked at it and thought it was hard antifouling on there. If that is the case, I can sand it a bit and go with ablative over the top of it. I am still trying to reach the Previous previous owner to find out what he used.
To do list: Replace shrouds Paint bottom Buy and install bimini ...... ..... ....

Welcome to our common addiction! You'll love the boat. It's a WB right? If so you might want to stick your head down the bilge and check it out. Don't want to scare you, just make sure everything is alright down there. If not, it's not a big deal to fix. Some ablatives cause some hard paints to let go... If you can find out what hard paint it is, check the compatibility on the manufacturers' sites. If not, try to get all of the hard paint off. You could be very sorry you didn't, as paint chips start clinging to your roller. (Believe me! )
Welcome aboard... we own a '95 WB hull number 151... there are two other '95 WB in our area and we tend to believe that 1995 was Catalina's best production year ever... BTW Our boat recently returned from a year-long 27000 km approx 18000 mile 'round the continent road and float trip and is non the worse for wear. You made a good choice!!!
SCnewbie....Congratulations and Enjoy. I am now starting my 3rd year with sailing and wishing you the same fun and enjoyment I've experienced with my boat.
