In summary based on information in this thread - - as I take a read on it:
1) handheld as a second marine radio for backup, station radio has more power in terms of signal distance 2) handheld may be easier to use, get one that floats 3) remotes available for station units 4) antenna options available rather than mounting on mast antenna 5) monitoring channel 16 advised 6) Ohio has lousy weather
Anything else for consideration?
Good information, hmmm I should buy an handheld as a backup.

Oh yes, Sryacuse, NY has lousy weather this time of year as well.

When you're frostbiting on Long Island Sound in an Optimist in 20-30 knots of air and 40-degree water, don't stand up in the boat! (I just watched a guy showing off, getting hit by a gust... )
I have to waterproof (briefly submersible) handhelds that also came with waterproof sleeves. Is there something I don't understand about "waterproof". Now that I have a fixed mount that is compatible with wired or wireless remotes, I will probably add one. The handhelds will still be useful in communicating with the dink or when the crew abandons me for the kayaks in an anchorage.
I have a fixed w/mast top antenna (wouldn't even consider a huge antenna off the aft pulpit) and have a Standard Horizon HX850S Floating handheld on special order at West Marine. I like the idea of the handheld with GPS and so able to make a DSC call with your coordinates. Man, those special orders take FOREVER!

"Water Resistant": Keep dry.
"50 Meters": Can be worn in the rain, under a raincoat.
"100 Meters": Can be worn briefly in the shower.
"250 Meters": Can be worn in a swimming pool for short periods.
