I looked at a C25 that had been converted from Tiller to Wheel before buying my boat. The owner did a very nice job on the conversion. He told me that he bought a kit from CD. He moved up to a larger boat and said that he was glad he made that mod. I was very close to buying that boat but I was also looking at the one I did buy. My boat was less than half the price, and I thought I would make that mod. But, after a season with a tiller, I knew that I would never make the change.
I spend a lot of time gunk-holing. I like the fact that my cockpit is wide open. The Admiral and the Dog and I spend a lot of time hanging out and reading in the cockpit. Its nice to push the tiller up and out of the way and have lots of unobstructed room.
I'm squarely in the "tiller is better" camp. But, I think, this is really just a matter of personal opinion. I don't think that a wheel in a boat our size makes much sense. Others will make convincing arguments in favor of a wheel. To each his own!
I'm pretty sure, however, that you won't find a whole lot of support for converting a boat of your vintage. Particularly, if you think that this might be a transitional boat and you may soon (in a couple of years, even) move up in size. It just isn't a cost effective modification.
Again, get to know your boat before you make her something she's not.
