I have an OB with pull start and want to add electric start. Will I need to also add an additional battery for that purpose or will my current battery (with shore power charging) handle the extra load?

You current battery can handle it. Starting an OB does not take too much juice. You'll love the electric start.

Jay;
I've seen a number of ways to run the cable from the motor to the battery. What worked very well for me was to drill a hole through the transom to the left of the motor, run the wires directly to the battery, then cover the hole with a small stainless clam shell like West Marine 180356. I don't have dock power only a 5w solar panel, but I'm never short of power for the boat or to start the engine. The engine we got is a Nissan 9.8 xl, great engine, small, light, quiet and turns easily in the space provided.

Best of luck

Bill, does your Nissan turn completely with its throttle handle down? Do you have the OB extension bracket?

Jay,
Any electric starter you retrofit to your engine should have a trickle charger that takes power from the engine and puts it into your battery. I am not certain how much you run your engine getting in and out of your marina or if you use it to negotiate narrow places where you don't have room to tack but I have never had to charge my single battery since putting my Tohatsu with electric start on the boat.

Randy;
Our boat is a '95, the engine mount is a piece of plastic "starboard", about 1 1/4 thick that is bolted to the transom, so the engine is moved back a little. The engine pivots completely, left to right with the handle in the vertical position, the handle would hit the gas tank locker if it was in the horizontal position. I generally use the handle vertical, easier to reach. Now off to sand the bottom, not my favorite job!

Bill

Mine is a 98 wb with the same set up for the motor. The Nissan 8 hp will not turn very far in either direction even with the handle removed for the remote on the pedestal. After discussion with our boat shop, it appears the best direction will be to go with a new motor electric start and remote. The two I am thinking of are a 8 hp and the 9.8 hp, only about $200+ diff in pricing. My concern would be will they turn when mounted.

FYI, Catalina sells a bracket that puts the OB 12" back. costs $75. Should help with rotation but also puts the weight further back.

Randy, I wasn't able to locate that 75 buck 12" bracket at either Catalina Woodland Hills or Catalina Direct. Where and how did you find it?

Frank, I have found that they respond to inquiries form their site's "Contact" page where you fill in an e-mail form. Choose the "Parts" contact.

thanks for all the input. After consulting with the boat shop it ends up being cost effective to just get a new motor. a 9.8 tohatsu (nissan) mfs9.8a3efl msrp.$2439, my price $1951.20. It is only >$200 more than the 8 hp. electric start 4 stroke. Same as the Nissan but less due to brand name...and I get $450 trade in for my 1998 8hp Nissan. They will install and hook to the Edson controls and add the key start. My only concern is will it rotate equal, more or less than the current motor.
