I am embarassed to say that my '81 Catalina still has the orgional gate valve seacocks. I am hoping to get some help and replace them. It has been covered all winter but if I remember there are three of them. Does anyone happen to know the sizes? I have to get reaquainted with what is there and how to replace them though as I said I hope to get some experienced help. Thanks.

I am not positive what was used but the Catalina Parts Manual lists the seacock as a 1/2" gate valve. At least for the main sink. The parts manual does not indicate what Catalina years it represents. Calling/Emailing Catalina Yachts Parts Dept may be able to provide you the specific info if no one else with an '81 provides it.

HI, CHARLIE.

DON'T KNOW FOR SURE, BUT WHAT I DID WAS BUY A BUNCH OF PLUGS AND TIED THEM EACH TO THE OLD SEACOCKS AND THEN ORDERED CATALINA DIRECT'S REPLACEMENT KIT. COULDN'T SHAKE THE OLD TO-HULLS LOOSE AND SO ALL IS AS IT WAS. MAYBE NEXT YEAR

Charlie: Are those valves on bronze pipes set into epoxy "volcanos" inside, with no visible flange (just a hole) on the outside of the hull--the original Catalina "to-hulls"? If so, you might want to do more than replace the valves... Search the C-25 archives for "to-hull".

What you described, Dave, sounds right. I don't think anything has changed down there since for a long time. I was planning on replacing everything. I will search the site somemore. Thanks for your input.

In a nutshell, you want to remove the pipes (sometimes scarily easy--they're threaded into the epoxy), grind the volcano somewhat flat, install proper thru-hulls (bronze or marelon) with mushrooms on the outside, and add ball-cocks to them. If you sleep on board, you'll sleep better.

I'm currently replacing all thru hulls on my 80 25. You can get kits from Catalina Direct or obtain the Marelon fittings from any supply house. I' replased three thru hulls and valves, also replacing scupper drains and bilge thru hulls. Dusty job - use a good filter mask if you do it yourself.

Good topic & info. I have a single thru-hull fitting and had water gush into my boat when the sink drain hose was accidently knocked off the bottom of the sink and fell into the bilge. I've got it secured now, but it is no substitute for the proper hardware.

admitting to embarrassements - you're not alone.

Catalina Direct has everything you need, although it is nothing special. They will send you a kit with everything you need for one through hull. You can also purchase everything you need from West Marine. I would go the Catalina Direct route. They are very user friendly and offer technical support. I just replaced the through hull on my 82 Catalina. Good Luck!
quote:
