Yesterday I heard about a truck going through the ice on the lake, and this morning there was a miserable looking red-winged black-bird sitting on a bullrush in the ditch in front of our place. Definite harbingers of springtime.
Of course there is still snow in the forecast, and all the ski runs are still operating.
The ospreys have returned... The swans are skirmishing for their territories on the river... Next week I paint the bottom and shine the topsides... Shortly after, I'll be saying, "Mystic Rail, Mystic Rail, this is Sarge on 1-3..."
we went for a hike out by the lake. The ice is softening up and is no longer safe to walk on. The only snow is at higher elevations. The Kestrels are building nests.
Soon. Soon I'll be falling off the dock, loosing anchors, cursing Powerboaters (present company excepted) and firing up the BBQ one-handed. (one hand for the BBQ, one hand for the beer)
The cherry trees are starting to bloom around here, and the daffodils are showing off in our yard. We already have lettuce, spinach, and peas sprouted in the garden. The robins and blackbirds are singing and sometimes we hear spring peepers in the trees.
Up into the 60s today but water is not yet turned on to all the docks. Winds 10-20mph calming to 10-15 toward evening. I should be on my boat and out sailing before 4pm today.
We have American Coots that visit us from Canada in the winter. They waddle in the water like ducks but have lobed things on the side of their feet/claws versus webbed feet like ducks. they also have bird beaks. These bird/ducks seem to be common in the mid-west but on the east coast, at least where I am, they only visit in the winter. Did not see them this past week ....Spring is definitely here !
Lucky dogs.......hemmm, sea dogs. It's snowing today but getting warmer. Temp range is between 22 and 34 this week. With any luck I should be pulling the tarps off in early May.
I did see a robin on Saturday, but I was visiting my son's family in Toledo. Ten hours north we're still seeing chickadees.
Oak pollen everywhere for the last month. Last week we had shorts and t-shirts for the mid 80's and clouds, this week temp has dropped during daylight hours and is 60's and 70's so we have jeans (or shorts) and t-shirts!
Florida winters are great, it's the best time to sail down here!
I'll second that Mark, The Oak pollen is everywhere over here in Daytona too. Same sort of weather also, but will climb to 80 degrees today and expected to be low to mid 80's for the week-end. I'll be pulling Bamboo shortly for bottom paint, will shine up the hull while she's out, just about done installing the tiller pilot, and am cleaning up the teak with "Teak Guard" (love that stuff). In a couple weeks I'll be lookin good and ready to sail!
I'll third what Mark and Dave said...oak pollen everywhere and the allergies flaring. After yesterdays Tigers vs Pirates game I headed out to the marina and gave Mighty M a good washing in preparation for good sailing weather this weekend.
Just thought you'd like to know, Lake Erie went from white to green last night. At least in my part of the world spring is here?!?!?!? Splash 2 weeks from tomorrow!
