Yesterday (Sunday) I headed out of Mission Bay on a sunny but cold spring day. It was quite windy and I had my #2 on (135). I found out later the winds were 18 gusting 24 from the SW. SW winds over our NW current always make it sloppy. Seas were very rough 4 to 6 feet at 7 seconds with a NW and S cross swell. About every 30 minutes there was a 7 footer or higher. Coming out of the bay I climbed right up a vertical 7 foot face, then slammed down the backside only to find another just behind. Still the bow popped over, in fact, I've only put the bow under twice in 5 years of sailing almost every day.

Right outside the harbor the winds went to next to nothing and I was slamming and pitching all over. There was a major offshore Laser race getting underway and I planned to get out to some of the outer marks and watch the action. Latecomer Lasers were towed to the mouth and let go. They were sailing past me downwind on their way to their start. I worked past a boat fishing (and rolling gunnel to gunnel) and eventually found some wind.

I caught up to the Lasers and tacked offshore, well outside of their course. This was a test for them today! Strong gusty winds with lots of holes, puffs and big swings in direction, rough, large seas, and about 200 boats!

I reached back and forth and enjoyed watching the action at their offshore marks. Later, I set Indiscipline on course of the Coronado Islands. In two weeks I have the Around the Coronados race, I hope we have winds like yesterday but not the seas. I was OK and holding on for dear life, ducking spray, and eating lunch, but I'm afraid the conditions would be quite beyond the ability of my crew (or most anyone). Its remarkable what I can tolerate without getting seasick.

I came back about 4 PM and met my dock friends. We talked a long time and I decided to do Newport-Ensenada with them again this year.

Today is a State holiday for County workers so I'm off again soon and next weekend I have a International Association guest from Maryland coming for a sail.
