I have completed refinising my rudder and have two coats of ablative paint on the bottom half. Was wondering if I should up the number of coats since I do have some of the paint left?

In my opinion 75% of the earth is water for a reason. That's why I sail.

Use it all up... leftover paint will 'spoil' (skin up) in the can. It's not a bad idea to apply extra coats to the leading edge of the keel, bow, etc... that's where it will go away first.

Actually, leftover paint can be stored for a long time if done right. Cover the paint can with some plastic wrap then, replace the lid. Tap the lid to secure it with something that won't dent it. Dents in the lid can let air in. Then, store the paint can upside down. This will seal in whatever moisture and air is still in the can and prevent that surface drying.

I'd do this after I put the extra coat on the leading edges that ClamBeach described.

Well, storing is probably not the best thing for what I have. Only about 1/4 to 1/3 of a can.. Best use is probably adding coats till I run out. Then I have done all I can until I buy another can.

Mike, if that is all you got left, not enough for another job in 5 years. So I would either use it up and maybe someone out there needs its.

"Actually, leftover paint can be stored for a long time if done right."

There's been no joy here with storing leftover ablative bottom paint... with only a 1/4 of the paint or so left in the can there's enough air to cause the paint to kick... hmmm...pondering this...

I think maybe if you poured the leftover paint into a smaller jar or can so there wasn't much air space you might be successful at storing it. Maybe I'll try that the next time around. Typically I completely use up whatever I've got open.

with that little bit left, I too would go ahead and use it up. Put another coat on the rudder or keel.
