I just saw a report on the news about Travelocity, the travel website, offering carbon credit offsets to their customers. This whole idea of trading in carbon credits is an interesting concept. I have been thinking sailboats should get some kind of credit for being energy efficient and using alternative power. I don't know what the savings on fuel is over a typical 25ft stink pot, but it is huge. I think I use about maybe a pint to get in an out of the marina on a typical day.
As an individual I don't know how to organize that, but I'm thinking as an association if we add up all the credits for all our members it would be a larger number. It might be a way to make some money for the association if we have an optional donation of our carbon offset to the Association, then we could sell them to Travelocity and by beer for the after race parties.
I guess I don't understand high finance, but who's going to give us carbon offsets, and where do they get the carbon offsets from, and what do we have to do to get them, and how do we convert them into a keg of beer, and does it help or hurt our application for carbon offsets that huge quantities of oil are used to manufacture our fiberglass boats?

(Hey, I burn less than a third of what many similar pots do! )

I just hope its not the same guys that figured out how to sell unsecured options on Asset Backed securities and Sub-Prime mortgages.
