C 25 1982 SK std. I am working on setting up my boat for single handing. Need some help on single line reefing. Following diagram in Catalina Direct book. Line will start in padeye near aft end of boom on port side up through reef "cringle"? (grommet in sail); down to fixed block on starboard side of boom; through padeyes along boom to fixed block on boom near mast; up through "cunningham"? (grommet in sail) down port side of sail to block at base of mast on starboard;then the diagram shows the line coming back from base of mast to cockpit along coach roof. Could the line come back to cockpit along boom instead? Possibly through another set of padeyes to a cleat on the boom.
I imagine you might be able to run the line back along the boom but the idea of running it back along the cabintop gives you the advantage of using a winch if needed and keeps your melon away from that angry mass of alum. we call the boom. I have my reefing line set-up just as you decribed...running back to a rope clutch near the cockpit. The combo of single-line reefing and mast-slot plates make reefing a breeze from the security of the cockpit. Nate
<font face='Comic Sans MS'><font size=2>Definitely run the reefing line out to an organizer and back to a clutch at the cockpit. If you are rigging the boat for single handing you will want all the lines led back to the cockpit anyway. Check out this Tech Tip on lines led aft. I have my main halyard the topping lift and the reefing line together so I can reef easily and fast (less than a minute) on the run.
