From what I've seen via pics on this forum, most of us, myself included, put the name on each side. since our boat name is short, I think we used 8" cap and 6" lowercase letters. 6" cap and 4" lowercase would also work well. Sorry, I don't know the exact dimensions at the transom, but I would think about 18-20".
I'm getting ready to put "Bamboo" on my hull too, but am going with the status quo, one on each side. And Sorry, no idea what those dimensions are either.
Thanks Guys - the previous owner put a palm tree decal on either side, that's why I'm going to put the name on the back. Dave - how did you post your boat picture in your signature?
Get creative and make up a boat name to go with the palm tree and put it by the tree, with sizing appropriate to the tree, maybe just "Oasis" instead of Summit Oasis. That will free up your transom for your yacht club and port of call, should you desire. If you still want to put the name on the transom, stack the 2 words and you'll be able to use larger letters. My guess is that you won't be able to go larger than 4" letters.
This isn't a spec to hand your decal maker, but for your planning, I suspect it's around 32". Allow for space on either side, and if you have a swim ladder (or want to add one), you'll also have some vertical issues. Sides of the hull are more visible, particularly with a transom-hung rudder and outboard... I had the hail-port behind the swim ladder on the transom.
