I need to go up the mast on my C25 and change the light out. When I was growing up we would put one of us in a harness and hoist them up the mast on our Pearson ... is this how people are doing this still or is there a better way to get up there. Thanks all for any suggestions, ''
I've gone up my mast in a bosun's chair with no problem for a quick and easy repair, but dropping the mast is pretty easy if the work is more extensive.
By using the "Search" function above you can find lots of info from previous discussions on: ---bosun's chair ---climbing the mast (if you choose, and info on) ---dropping the mast ---raising the mast ---gin pole ---A-frame (if you choose, to work on the) ---steaming light ---deck light ---anchor light ---wiring the mast ---LED light
With all that info you can make use of the experience of current and previous members of this board. Everybody is interested in safety, convenience, and cost. Good luck.
When my anchor light circuit lit up nothing at all, I hoped the bulb needed to be changed. Many hours later, I had built an A-frame, dropped the mast, built an anchor light fixture attachment, installed a new anchor light fixture, replaced the steaming light bulb, rewired the mast and cabin cables and through deck connector, learned a lot about "crimps" and "tinned stuff", and raised and tuned the mast.
Don't know how this will work out, but I will post when I do. We just formed a little coalition at my marina. 13 of us got together and bought a Mast-Mate climber. This is the type that you hoist up the sail groove with a halyard then climb up it like a ladder. We also bought an industrial grade (read "expensive") safety harness with the breakaway attachment and a belt with toolbag. We bought a plastic dock box at Walmart and a combination lock. The gear is all in the box, the box is screwed to the dock and all the members have the combination. Total cost was a little over $600.00. We pro-rated the cost according to mast height. The guy with the Cal 33 paid about $53.00 My part was $42.00. Weather and circumstance have not yet permitted a test run of the gadget, but I will post as soon as it does. We are optimistic.
