Still putting my c25 Fin keel trailer together and have a question.Would anybody know what rating winch I will need? It is a fin keel so the retreiving process is floating it on the trailer, so I am thinking it does not need to be a heavy rated winch. Is this correct? Thank you for you input....Don

You might want to check with one of the trailer manufacturers, such as Sail-Trailer in Columbus, GA, or Triad. Maybe their specs are listed online. Looking at Northern Tool's catalog, the Fulton marine winches range from 600 lbs. to 3,700 lbs. The highest single speed winch is 1800 lbs. and two-speeds start at 2,000 lbs. whatever you get, make sure it has a strap, not rope.
Edit: I checked Sail-Trailer's web site. For their Catalina 25 fixed keel trailer, they use a 1800 lb strap winch. Hope that helps.

Don,

The winch on my trailer is a DL 2500A and is made by Dutton-Lanson Co. the capacity is 2500 Lbs or 1134 Kgs. Maybe this will help.

If your trailer doesn't have a 'safety strap' (or chain) be sure to install one...

Get the heaviest duty winch you can afford, and that will fit.

While your boat is afloat, you don't need much of a winch. But when your boat is resting on bunks (or rollers) and you still need to move it forward on the trailer so that the bow is right up against the bow roller on your trailer - for that last 12 - 18" you need a winch that will move a 5,000LB boat.
When I retrieve, I have no problem floating the boat up to the forward most roller (that the bottom of the bow/hull rests on) the challenge is getting the bow of the boat to 'mount' that forward most roller. This is being done while the trailer is at an angle and the winch not only has to haul the boat, it has to do so uphill....and while the stern of the boat is still in the water and is counteracting the upward force you need at the bow.
Get a good winch.
