What kind of wax (or wax-substitute) do you recommend for my boat's topsides and cockpit? I was thinking of some kind of artificial wax, like polyglow. What are your thoughts?
Thanks,

I used PoliGlow on my 1986 C22 for several years and loved it. Made the boat look like a champ and was very quick and easy. Follow the directions and you will be happy with the result. Use their cleaner - the first time -prior to using the PoliGlow.
I use Poliglow on the hull sides but prefer a pure wax for the smooth sections inside the cockpit. I am using BoatUS/West Marine/Starbrite non-skid cleaner/protector on all non-skid.(some were clearance items at $.85/bottle - They are all the same under different names) Doing that during this Spring period. The cockpit seats came out fine.
The birds are using poop...and that seems to last the longest. Must be removed or it stays put and sometimes displaces the boat matl.
I've heard good things about West/Starbright PTEF polish, and am trying it on the hull this year. Poly Glow is a good choice for older fiberglass--I've used it and liked it--but it doesn't match wax or PTEF for a mirror shine.
There a lot of good synthetics out there, but I prefer a real wax (I use Colonites 925)Because it can be stripped off easly by light sponge mopping with high strength Amonia followed by immeadiatly flushing with lots of water. The dirt comes away with the wax leaving a clean surface for polishing and the reapplication the next seasons wax. Wax is just a protective sealer for the fiberglas the shine comes from polishing ,every few years, with rubbing compound before you apply the wax.
I put a coat of Starbright polish with PTEF on my boat in 2003 just before initial launch. Now I repeat that every year before launch(includes hull to water line), again at the forth of July (topsides and cockpit only), and just befor Labor Day. The boat looks brand new and lives in salt water. Sometimes I sneak an extra cost during the season in the cockpit where people have a tendency to spill things. The stuff is too expensive but boy has it worked! Willy
