Randy, I almost have the winch ready to mount. Will get the pictures as I install the unit. It will be used to pull the boat onto the trailer but can be transfered to the gin pole to raise the mast. I have a 8/2 wire 14' long so I can use the 30 amp plug circuit for the inverter in the cabin. Since I can still raise my mast with my main sheet system this will be my next system as I get into my 80's. You can use this system now or have you lengthen your main sheet to use a jib sheet winch? I'll get the pictures tomorrow as I will be out of action after Tuesday for a while as my knee date was moved up. I got caught going up the ladder while on my crutches so I've been grounded.

Jim, great idea. I am looking forward to the photos. I have seen 12V winches used for this purpose and seeing yours will be helpful. I have now rebuilt the gin pole but have not settled on what winch system to use. Push button electric would be nice!!

Here is my RC winch with a strap attached for securing to the mast step and a block to be attached to the bow fitting. I use the shackle to connect the cable to a SS ring which is also attached to the fore stay and the bridle and the gin pole. My gin pole is the spinnaker pole which when raised vertical with everything attached and attached to the mast at the lowest setting of the car for the pole. I couldn't get up on the boat with the whole setup but this is the winch and it's attachments. It was also 17 degrees this morning and hasn't warmed up much. My launch later this season will have the set up and raising on film.

Jim, nice idea. I was thinking that the winch would go in the anchor locker but your idea of having it at the base of the gin pole is very smart. I have been looking at winches and found a 12V version. It power winches in both directions. I figure I could make a plug that would allow it to plug into the deck plug for the mast lights.

Downside is that it weighs a lot. I still may try the manual winch idea first or a block system and the cabin-top winch.

Randy, if you put it in the anchor locker, you'd have an electric anchor windlass with just a little SS modification.

The mast light circuit would be too light. I use a 30amp breaker with #10 wire. The winch is first to be used to pull the boat on to the trailer and it will be stored as low as possible in the cabin when I am on a cruise. The plug in the back of the pickup is the same as the boat. I hadn't thought of using it for the mast raising until this thread. This season is going to be very interesting.

The winch was $59.00 at Harbor Freight and the hitch was $9.98 and I added 3 more bolts. I modified the wiring hookup and increased it's size. The orginal winch on the trailer will still be used to launch because of it's brake (roller trailer) and the RC winch doesn't have a manual crank.

I had thought about doing this as well but with a slight difference. I intended mounting a standard heavy duty electric trailor winch in place of the hand crank model on my trailor. With a remote operating device it would be very easy to raise the mast with a gin pole or A-frame without having to move the winch onto the deck, anchoring it, etc.

I had always wanted a power trailer winch but the cost and using it once a season stopped me. Leaving the unit on the trailer exposed to the elements was an other thought so I can now remove the unit with one pin. Because of single handing and doing the NW cruise launch with the mast down made for designing the system for a water raising and using what was on board. It was always better with other sailors and we helped each other. I have taken my bridle and main sheet system to other C25's and raise the mast which is a big plus and the system doesn't have to be reinvented each time.

Just a thought here: Has anyone ever used the method of attaching the forward lower shrouds to the trailer winch (together with a mast-up device at the stern to first elevate the mast a little) to raise the mast on a C-25? I saw a guy do this with a C-22 and it was quite effective.
