I have the old style Tuff-Luff system which has a crack in it which has been "sort of" repaired. I would like to change out all of my jibs to have hanks but I have never done this before. Is this something you can do yourself or do you have to send the sails off to have the hanks installed? What is the approximate cost and best source for ordering the hanks?
had the tuff luff system and yanked it off in place of hanks and never looked back. much easier to 'tune' underway and when short handed, much easier to drop trou. . as they say. $10/ hank is right on, and no, dont try it yourself. its worth the $10.
I know that some of you guys have removed your Tuff Luff system and installed hanks. Is it possible to go the other way, remove the hanks and install the Tuff Luff wire?
Just as a note, since we're on the subject, I went from the foil to hanks a year and a half ago, and I'm about at the point of thinking I would have been better off staying with the foil, after spending about as much on installing hanks on 3 sails as I would have by buying a new foil. My understanding from talking to some other folks is that new foils are 'slick' enough that your sail will easily drop by its own weight. That wasn't my experience with my old 20 year old foil though. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to Karen's question about going back to foil from hanks, but my experience with sail makers is they can do about anything for the right price, but I don't think that would be expensive.
Its easy to put on hanks yourself and for far cheaper than $10 each. I got these little white plastic hanks from sailrite. They twist on and off. I put one every 2 feet (bronze hanks are every 3 feet). They cost about $2 each. They slip over the wire and you just screw 2 screws (supplied) through the material. Took about 1 hour per sail (I did 2 sails).
I use these on the racing jibs I got second hand. Works fine and the 150% sail has seen winds in excess of 20 knots.
My old tuff luff foil cracked last month and I replaced it with a new Harken carbo foil. Sails are much easier to get up but effort is still required to pull a sail down.
The question was is it possible to go back to a foil from a sail that has had hanks on it? We all know that you can toss the foil and install hanks but can you go from hanks to foil?????
In short, yes you can. Buy foil, I got a Harken carbo foil. Install, may require you to cut and shorten forstay. Take sails to a loft to have foil tape put on sails. 120.00 per sail.
I did the same. My boat had hanks, and I gave them up and bought the Harken twin carbo foil. Since my sails were old and worn out and I was equiping the boat to race, I bought a new genoa also. But on the jib I pryed the bronze hanks off and then had to pry the bronze gromments off so the tape would go up the track smoothly. It was tedious work but the results worked and I'm satisfied for the time being. I will probably buy a new jib this fall. I debated a while on making this change, but in the end decided this was the best plan for racing and concluded that if I got tired of the foil, I'd probably go to a roller furling setup so the sails would will not have to be modified to much if that occurs.
