I race in a PHRF fleet. The boat was new to me last year, I think I ended up 4th for the season. I'm working for this year and think I can nab 2nd. I'm curious, what crew size are you guys racing with, and what are the roles of the crew members? Tomorrow, I will go out with a group that hopefully will make up the core group. There are 6 counting me. Thoughts.

I've never had 6 on my boat during a race, not sure where I'd put them all. We race short courses with lots of maneuvers and moving all those people around would probably get some feet and hands stepped on. I race with a minimum of 2 (not real good) and a maximum of 5 (preferred so far in heavier air). I generally will not set the spinnaker in light wind with less than 3 and want 4 for a heavier wind set. I find that 4 can run the boat pretty well and the 5th person is rail meat mostly. I race in predominantly light wind conditions (5 knots) so boat weight is probably a bigger consideration for me than it may be for others with better wind conditions.
Sounds like a total on the boat of 6, 5 crew and skipper.
Really good point about light air and weight. I did find last year that skipper and 2 is very difficult to manage the spinnaker. Skipper and 3 is better.
