I have a 1986 C25 diesel inboard and I want to access the top of the engine by cutting a deck plate hole in the floor of the cockpit. I was planning on using a 4 inch dia hole for the opening and use the screw in cover that includes a o-ring seal. The hole is for accessing the water and oil lube addition for the engine. Does anyone have experience good or bad with this mod.? Thanks

There aren't too many diesel C25s so it is unlikely that this mod has been done.
FWIW - many of us have cut ports into the sidewall of the cockpit for access/air circulation into the quarterberth.

exactly what are you trying to get to? There is little I cannot get to thorough the access openings and the whole q-berth bulkhead comes off with 10 screws if you must.

The coolant and oil fills are on top, so you may get off easier with one of these.

hi, i also have a 86 with diesel, there is no reason to need to access the engine from the cockpit via cutting the floor, its a silly idea to do so. like someone else said, u can remove the wood enclosure around the engine on all sides.. this engine has very little maintence and are a bombproof set up.. i do all my own maintence and yes sometimes its tight to get to things, but every task is doable, just think it out. i recently pulled my alternator and starter for a bench test/rebuild and it was a heck of a process to reach in places but i was determined and did it. not sure but i would guess any hole you cut in the cockpit floor would have to be huge to get any benefit, and that would weaken the floor badly, also compromise water tightness. please dont do it!!!

Not sure I'd call it silly until I know what he's after. I've posted enough silly ideas that people have graciously corrected, so let's pass that on.

I am trying to ease the access to add oil and water. The low clearance requires pumping fluids into the engine. The result is a mess with spilled fluids requiring mopping up every time which is never 100% clean. I thought if the floor is weaken by putting a hole in it, I could put a grate down to bridge the whole floor as it was too weak the day it was made. I understand every additional hole should be considered carefully as that just another port of entry and that is why I am asking if anyone else has had any experience with this situation.
Thanks for responding.

Not sure what you're using to pump the fluids but maybe someone makes a better device to pump the fluids into the engine than what you're using now. Maybe look around on the internet to see what's available before cutting your floor.

I'd rather spend a little extra time cleaning up a mess than worry about all the problems that could arise cutting a hole in the cockpit floor. How often are you having to add fluids to the engine?
