We were out at the boat today. Sort of cold and rainy so we just did some work on the boat.
The first project was to create a place to store the whisker pole. I used two eye straps (with ferrule) (WM#149302), one at each end. I made a loop of plastic covered 3/32" cable through each eye strap. The eye straps are affixed to the teak trim in the fore of the cabin. The whisker pole hangs from these.
The other mod is to store the support for the pop top enclosure. I bought from Catalina four of the plastic brackets that C250 water ballast boats use to mount the table in the cockpit. These are screwed into the cabin top in the V-berth area. Works like a charm.
We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.
C 250 ET-57 Table Support (white starboard) $2.55 each
Catalina has a $15 minimum purchase requirement so I got 6 off the things (only used 4). I ordered via e-mail from chris(at)catalinayachts.com
I considered the aft location and know it is a popular one. For me, working the poptop support around the ladder was more awkward than the spot up front. I also plan to add opening portlights to the aft sleeping area and did not want any hardware in the way.
P.S. The 3/32 cable for the loops that hold the whisker pole are 6" long each. I used a vice-grip to clamp down on the aluminum "joiner." Got the cable and joiner at Home Dept. I have a similar setup on two stanchions for holding the whisker pole on deck. I'll post a photo of them tonight.
Randy, Nice mods! I like the placement of the top bow. But, now you just added more to my-to-do list!
I have the rear berth ports on this list as well and one over the galley in the cabin window (similar to the head port). Still working up to cutting big holes in the boat. I had a hard enough time cutting a 3" hole for the nicro vent (mentally)!!
Wil, thanks! Check out Tom Potter's web site for a great description of how to do the portlights project for the aft berth. Great step-by-step directions. My next project is moving the winch to the coaming and then I want to tackle the portlights project. I also like the idea of an opening port in the galley. Catalina Direct sells the opening portllight kit you need for that.
Turk, did you order the (6) mounts for the pop top? I want to do same. I will pay for your extra 2- and ask Randy for his 2. I will of course pay for shipping. Let me know. Steve A
They do not have a catalog but it safe to assume that they sell replacement parts for basically everything on your boat that you can't get at a regular marine store.
