My battery is sitting on a wooden board that's resting on a 2"-high frame-shaped fibreglass ridge that's part of the hull.
I assumed that I can do away with the board (maybe the PO had it there to mount a 2nd battery?) and put the battery into the frame, but when I tried that it didn't seem to fit in.

The PO may have wanted to install a larger battery (or maybe got a deal on one that's a different size) so he fabbed the board to hold the new battery.
A standard Group 24 battery should fit in that little compartment.
Sometimes people put a board on top of the little compartment in order to use multiple batteries. I chose to rip out the little compartment so I could use two Group 24 batteries back there. A single group 24 should fit in the box.
FYI, it is always helpful to include a photo. It helps others better understand the situation you are facing.
