I recently bought a C25 and it came with the 9.9 saildrive? Johnson. I fired it up yesterday in the front yard and it runs great. Sits in neutral fine and goes into reverse no problems but when I try to put it in forward it doesnt budge. It was getting dark so I didn't try adjusting any of the linkage. I will try working on it again tomorrow but I was just wondering if others have had this problem?

Do you mean Saildrive or Sailmaster? Saildrive is the inboard installation with an outboard-like lower unit going through the bottom of the boat. Sailmaster is Johnson's outboard for sailboats.

If it's the outboard, check the linkage to the tilt lock that engages in reverse (to keep the motor from popping up), to see if it's sticking there--it should disengage in forward.

If memory serves me correctly, the throttle on my old Johnson 9.9 liked to be in a certain spot to shift gears.

Mine would not go into forward unless the throttle was low.

It shouldn't go into either gear except very near idle. Probably linkage, worst case is internal in the lower unit - more bucks but rebuildable, or an excuse to buy a 4 stroker.

We are beginning to think that noise is a good excuse to buy a 4 stroke, but I hate to decommission a perfectly good engine.

I thought the same thing, but, I got sick & tired of the smell, the smoke, the noise, etc. and was able to sell my 2-stroke for twice what I thought it was worth, so it paid for about 1/3 of a new 9.8 hp 4-stroke.

I've got a 2-cycle Suzuki with oil injection and I just realized that I've never smelled anything. I don't even see any smoke.

Personally, I've always liked the smell of burning 2-cycle oil (within reason). Brings back a lot of childhood memories at the lake.
