Don't know exactly when balanced rudders replaced the original rudders, but with your hull number, I suspect you have one. I have one on my '80 C25, but it was probably purchased as a replacement sometime before I got it.

I'm pretty sure all '89s and later had them--not sure about '88s. I retrofitted the same rudder on my '85.

Thanks again guys. I thought I have one based on the performance characteristics described in previous message strings. Is there a drawing available with dimensions or some unique measure that confirms the type?

Thanks again.

Dave,

If you have the bumpout forward of the pintles, you have a balanced rudder.

All of the surface of the rudder is situated aft of the pintles and gudgeons. The leading edge of the balanced rudder takes a jog forward, just below the bottom of the transom, so that part of the rudder's surface is forward of the pintles and gudgeons.

If you'll look closely at the line drawing below, you'll see that the leading edge of the rudder extends forward slightly, beneath the bottom of the boat. That's a balanced rudder.

Here is a borrowed picture of the original unbalanced rudder. Note the straight, slightly aft trailing leading edge. (The leading edge in the pic is the closest edge to you)

Thanks again guys. As usual the input and feedback is the best. I really enjoy this forum and what makes it the best is its members. Quite honestly I'd be surprised if other comparable sites have a membership that communicates as much about their vessels and passion for the sport.
