Many discussions on this point in the archives.

In several years of Cat25s, the cable is held in place with some kind of gunk, but if you give it a good yank, it'll come free (or snap).

Word has it that the other end of the cable runs down in the bilge below the bulkhead, and you may be able to use the old cable as a messenger line to pull the new cable through. Use good strong tape.

All hearsay however.

I rewired my mast and the wiring into the cabin. It was only after I completed the project that I discovered the old wire was not encapsulated between the headliner and the cabin decking. On my '89, the wiring was held snugly by the narrow hole thru the headliner. Accessing the old wire from the under the port side of the bilge area, I gave a tug and the old wiring fell down the mast column.

I had installed a new wire in the cabin from a new switch panel to the deck connector by drilling a new hole from within the deck connector hole. I used a long shank drill bit and angled it inside the deck connector hole as far forward as i could and it came out in the Porta Potti area forward of the bulkhead. I used Anchor Brand Mast wire which was 5 - 14 gage wires in a round cable sheath. I used 3 of the positive leads for the mast - anchor, deck and steaming lights. I used the remaining positive lead for one of the two new fans I installed at the top of the mast column (convenient to ventilate the VBerth and/or the main cabin areas and also close to where the mast wire came out of the headliner). The new wire was run along the post side and behind the bulkhead and port side main cabin seats back to the new switch panel (BEP 8 Circuit breaker Switch Panel). I mounted the switch panel below the sink where I can gain access to it without leaving the cockpit. The old switch panel is still hooked up but I migrated most of the circuits to the new switch panel. The old switch panel is inconveniently located under the cabin steps.

Photos of the new switch panel and fans are on my website. (Not time right now to insert the photos onto this posting.)

My '82 had it running along the deck hull joint and across the ceiling in the head. Do not be afraid to simply make a new hole. If you do not have a halyard plate at the base of your mast be sure to place the new connector where it will not interfere with a halyard plate if and when someone installs one.
