I just dont understand why the previous owner of my boat drilled alot of mounting holes everywhere on this boat, its driving me crazy trying to cover them up and fix them etc. I just dont get it, does anyone have anything that will blend and seal screw holes ,that wont look so bad, I have been covering with stickers, plaques , what ever I could find, now Im down to my last eight holes on the deck near one of my winches on the starboard side, I REALLY HATE HOLES AND LACK OF THOUGHT IN MOUNTING SOMETHING
I know what you mean, I HATE to put holes in my boat. It's on the top of the cabin right? That pretty much leaves out teak trim. I know there's some good gelcoat guys that'll chime in on this one though (I am not).
Marine tex in white. Tape shut back of hole or fill it in a bit with anything. Fill the hole with marine tex ( or any resin you have tinted white ) The hole will build up on the sides with resin before the middle fills. Three layers is not uncommon. You can add micro balls the make the resin lighter and it will fill faster and be easier to sand. Grind down flat, sand and wax.
I don't know how you do it in one of the textured areas.
I want to remove my life lines so I'm kinda reviewing my options.
I use Marine-Tex. For most white areas it is fine. For the gray non-skid I tint it with black Evercoat tint. I also just used gelcoat for the first time on a repair. Got matching gelcoat from minicraft.com which matched the white very well. Also added black tint to get a good gray match.
Bear in mind that while you may fixate on the tiny patch, no one else will notice it if you do a decent color match.
For non-skid I make the patch a bit high and then use a very small round file (modeler's file) to recreate the non-skid pattern. Again, if the color mix is close no one will see it.
Randy, you beat me to the punch. I was gonna send Dont Panic your way cuz I know you just repaired holes from winch replacment. And a fine job you did too! Steve A
I've used Marine-Tex with great success...one of the reasons I have not used gel coat repair is because I heard it is very runny and if your surface is vertical, you stand to do a lousy job. What is the collective experience with Marine-Tex VS Gel coat repair kits?
