Considering that my hull is solid and in constant contact with the water, I have always assumed that the water temp is close if not dead on, and consistent. As for the wax, thing, I like the the impact resistance of my epoxy and I bet it provides a better water temp. If I were to, for some unknown reason, want to move it to another location the rarity of that event would allow purchasing a replacement to be inconsequential.

Peter,
My Humminbird Piranha came with a transom mounted transducer and I mounted it using the toilet bowl wax method and it works perfectly including temperature which really surprised me (it might be a degree or two off but it's not much).
The only difference between the transducer is one has ears on it attaching the the transom and the other is just around puck that will fit down into a tube of oil, epoxy, or whatever you use to mount it.
