I met the new owner (cash transferred at 2pm today) of a 1980 C-25 SR/FK at my marina who has sailed HobieCats and now plans to sail/motor his boat from the mid-Chesapeake Bay to his home in NC. He has a GPS with charts and a radio. His depth sounder works ok. Other than that, I don't know how his boat is equipped. He needs to leave the marina within a week.
If you post on this thread some sources of information on the ICW, I can pass them along to him, but he is hoping to speak to someone with experience and local knowledge. He does not have internet access while away from home.
He would like some advice on how to make use of the ICW. I told him about the Association and he was very interested. In the meantime, I will share his cell phone number with anyone could help a brave new sailor bring his boat south. Send me a personal message.

We'll school em... we draw 6'6" and most people shake their heads when they hear that. We only ran aground once and that was on a sunken ship in Morehead City in the "anchorage" behind Sugar Loaf island. If you have the charts and a decent plotter, the ICW is a piece of cake. There is a lot of shoaled areas, but for the most part the trip both ways has been awesome.
I'll deliver the boat FYI - $400 a day plus beer!

The ICW is a good ride ,I came north with my brother 2 years ago from Wilmington N C . His boat was a 46 ft. that drew only 4 ft (trawler)type. I think it took us 5 days going 6 knots . We stayed at marinas every night , I dont know about anchorages.(his boat He paid) You get to experience a variety of landscapes ,rivers ,sounds, back bays and the bustling Norfolk, Portsmouth,Newport News area. He did have a chart plotter and good charts. We did this trip in Early March experiencing a lot of bad weather like freezing rain in N.C. I got got off his boat in Atlantic City after coming up the Chesapeake Bay ,C & D canal, Delaware Bay .
Good Luck

I've just called our newbie from NC and passed along the info. He has arranged to keep the boat a few more weeks at this temporary slip, so he can learn more about the boat and the ICW.
He said he has questions about the running rigging. I suggested this forum for that kind of info.
I helped a friend take his Island Packet 41 down this very stretch from Hampton Roads to Albemarle (sp) Sound. The hardest part was finding the right channel to take as you left the Bay and started down the ICW. There are several draw bridges you have to pass under. Some you can request to open, some you wait for the scheduled opening. It took us three days, the first night, we tied up to a sea wall at no charge, at one of the bridges. It was next to a small park, so there were even restrooms. The second night, we tied up to a dock at a marina that had showers, and a small store. It was a nice experience, and once you clear the traffic in the CB, and the Navel base in Norfolk, it is a pretty laid back trip. A functional depth sounder is almost a must. The ICW is not as well maintained as it used to be and some of the channels are silted in a bit. We ran aground twice. We freed ourselves once, but had to get pulled out of the mud the second time. But it was a very idyllic trip. Slow, but interesting. At one point, we passed right next to the old US Presidential Yacht, the Sequoia. Pretty cool. Albemarle Sound (near Kitty Hawk NC) is big, and we had some wind and waves when we passed through. How far into NC is he going? Alligator River, and the Pungo canal come after the Sound. Have him get a good guide, like mentioned above, and he should have no problems.
