I'm contemplating flying the U.S. Flag from either the spreader or backstay. Thought I find out where other members display the flag and what size flag is preferred.
Randy, promise not to snicker. At Home Depot. They are foam tubes for hot water insulation pipes! The PO had them on but I had to replace and spend an entire $2! But rather than removing the plastic paper and have then stick on-which is time consuming to remove later-I left the paper on and its fine. But they work great! You will have to cut the piece in half, one for each side. Oh I took 3 little pieces of nylon sting to tie them down. And if you are so inclined, get small piece of sunbrella at fabric store, and cover them for couple more bucks. You can also order from Catalina, $78 for 2! Steve A
Do NOT buy the cat seat back rail cushion from the Catalina Store. I did and returned them. They fit poorly and look terrible. Our seats backs have a tight radius and the covers from the Catalina Store crimp/scrunch up badly making the curve.
Paul, good eye for an old guy! I wont make excuses. I will adjust this weekend. Thanks for pointing it out. I dont want to look sloppy. How about my Anchor Shade. Do you like that. I know its not a bimimi but I am working on that. Steve A
The 50 star national flag, the ensign, or the yacht ensign should only be flown in two places. Either on a flagstaff on the stern as demonstrated by Steve A. Or on the leech of the mainsail as demonstrated by Sean. It should not be flown from the spreader. Only the yacht club burgee and, most importantly, the courtesy flag of a visited nation are flown from the spreader. The Annapolis Book of Seamanship has a very good section on flying all types of flags.
