The Honda 9.9HP outboard was delivered today - with the standard 3-gallon (12-L) fuel tank. I'd like to upgrade to a 6-gallon tank, but I'm not sure it will fit into the C-250 fuel locker.
Measuring at the narrowest points, the fuel locker is approximately 18.5" wide x 12" long x 13.75" deep. I'm trying to find the dimensions for the Honda 6-gal tank (Honda #17500-ZV5-903 or 17500-ZV5-910?) to determine if it will fit. No luck so far. I guess I could contact my nearest Honda Marine dealer, but in the meantime...
Has anyone else been able to use a Honda 6-gallon outboard fuel tank on a C-250?
Thanks, Martin

Martin as far as I know, I got one of the last few 6gal tanks that fit in our locker. It was a Tempo who now is out of business. I got it at the end of last year. I dont know of anything else. Steve A
If I find a Tempo Value 6, do I need to make sure it's compatible with the Honda quick-disconnect fitting? Or, do I buy the fitting from Honda and install it on the tank?
FWIW, our boat has a metal 6+ gallon tank that fits perfectly with room for a couple of propane cylinders and quarts of oil. If anyone's interested I can take pictures and try to get a manufacturer's name. I've seen these new for around $120, but I don't remember where. I see them all the time on Craigslist for around $15-$20.
You should have no problems finding Honda fittings for pretty much any contemporary tank you might find, older tanks were more proprietary. I've changed one of my tanks from old style Mercury to Johnson & now Tohatsu. I'll say that making the change to Tohatsu has been the most difficult, the fittings that Moeller (sp?) sells for the tank connectors don't work properly unless you make sure that the ball valve is a smooth ball, not the one with the nipple on it. The nipple's supposed to be on the hose side, not the tank side. Or at least that's how my stock Tohatsu tank & hose came.
I pointed this out to both Fisheries & West Marine, neither seemed to care much.
If you have a lead on a six gallon tank that will fit...I'd love to know about it. I made a valiant effort to obtain one of the last Tempo Valu 6 tanks...it was to little to late. A couple of suppliers actaully took my order, got me all happy, only to contact me later to tell me they are gone forever.I can say with authority that "you can't get there from here" 3 gallons just is not enough.
David, yes please find the manufacturer of the metal tank. The Tempo is a very tight fit so if there is an alternative I would like to know about it. Does you metal tank have a gauge? The Tempo does not.
I took the quick connect of my Honda tank and put it on the Tempo.
Sorry guys it's a Tempo as well, so this particular model is probably no longer available as well. It does have a gauge, I wouldn't want one that didn't. It does say a subsidiary of Plasti-Kote Industries, maybe they still make the steel tanks? Dunno.
However, like I said, I see tanks like this on CL all the time, frequently for around $15. When I get time, I'll locate a manufacturer of similar tanks. I know I've seen them for a bit over $100 somewhere reasonably recently (last six months or so). I've got barbecue guests due...well, there goes the doorbell.
The tank in David's picture looks EXACTLY like the 6 gallon tank we had with our 1972 100HP Evinrude outboard. As David mentioned you should be able to locate one of these on Craiglist without a problem.
Has anyone tried the Tempo Ultra6? These are probably no longer manufactured, but there are many for sale online.
The dimensions I've found for the Ultra6 are: 13 1/2"W x 21 1/8"L x 9"H, and this is pretty darn close to the dimensions posted here for the Tempo Valu6.
I've ordered an Attwood Marine 6-gallon tank (Attwood #8872-4) from HomeDepot.com ($20.59 + shipping & sales tax) of all places. I couldn't find this item in the usual locations (Defender.com, WestMarine.com, etc.).
The dimensions are 21"L x11-1/2"W x 9-1/2"H, which is pretty darn close to that of the Tempo Valu6, so I figured I'd give it a try.
I'll let everyone know if this works, and I'll post pictures.
Fedex doesn't deliver to Nevada - too big a gamble.
If the Attwood fits it will be a good thing for C250 owners. Like the Tempo Valu6, it does not have a gauge but relies on the ability to see the fuel through the tank sides.

And USPS and UPS and DHL and... which work very well for purchases on Amazon.com and eBay and so on.
However, my experience has been that folks buying/selling on Craig's List are generally interested in local transactions, especially so that a buyer can inspect something before they purchase it. Additionally, I've found that sellers on Craig's List aren't interested in packing up an item and shipping it; if they wanted the shipping trouble, they'd sell on eBay.

Indeed! I'll let everyone here know the results of my "gamble."

I just bought one of these today on eBay. It was brand new, but I got screwed on the price ($49.95) and shipping ($36 for USPS Priority Mail). However, this is the ONLY good solution, so I bit the bullet. The dimensions are something like 18 3/8" x 11", so the fit should be perfect.
Martin, it looks great, it's what you need, and will last forever. Amortized over the years of fun you will have on your boat = great deal.
PS. I just ordered a new 15' cable to connect the control unit of my Autohelm to the wheel drive mechanism. Basically a two wire cable with a connector at the end. $60 + $25 shipping and handling = $85. You got the better deal.
It will last forever if you can keep it forever. My six gallon metal Tempo tank was stolen when they stole the outboard. It was easier to replace the outboard! However I did find a new tank last winter. Now I have a latch and a lock on my fuel locker. At least they will think twice (and hopefully make some noise) if they take this one. These tanks are the way to go for ease of operation. When Overtons carried them a few years ago they were over $90. I think you did good on the price.
