The kid,Zac Sunlander, age 16, is planning to sail around the world solo, setting a new record, which is now 18. He is a couple of cities up from me. Its pretty cool. Here is his video:

Robin Lee Graham left Long Beach CA when he was 16 -- the sail took longer than he had planned (actually he "planned" only to go to Hawaii but . . .) So I comment Zac for making he trip and really admire his parents for lettingthim -- but he may take longer than he expects . . . For what it's worth, Robin Lee Graham is one of my childhood (and still today, adult) heros -- I followed his journey in National Geographic and later in his book "Dove" with baited breath.

And Graham did it in a 23' boat. I gotta go rent that movie, again.

When you read Graham's book and realize the close calls and amount of presence of mind/maturity he had at such a young age it is truly humbling. Many times I have bees sailing in what I have considered rough conditions for a C-25 and thought about his sailing further, in often worse conditions on a Lapworth 24 . . . then again, looking at my past post, what should I expect if I can't spell or type -- lol

A neat story and I wish him well, whether he sets the record or not. I was amused, however, at how, in his words, they "stuck on" different features to the boat. That must be some kinda glue they're using!

I also wish him fair winds and gentle seas, a la Graham and Dove. I have one Oh Oh though, If I were going to sea I'd prefer a boat with less openings and smaller ones, especially those lalapaloosas in the cabin. Seems one crashing wave up front will compromise those panoramic views in short order, though I hope not.

Val,

I read similar criticisms of ocean cruisers many years ago when Sundear and Hunter started putting large port windows in the topsides and cabin trunk. Yet, they are still being built that way with little ill effect. You've gotta wonder though.

Somehow I doubt that many Hunters circumnavigate. Their cockpits are WAY too big, for just one problem. Seems to me they're really designed to be floating weekend condos.
