Own a fairly old C25, hull 720. I am getting the impression that either Catalina and/or owners have moved the main and jib halyard winches off the mast and onto the cabin top. Have long thought about doing this. Any words of wisdom in terms of hardware and how to rig?

I moved the winch from the mast to the starboard side cabin top and located a double clutch just ahead of it. I put it between the pop top and the hand rail--plenty of room there. Put a couple of blocks at the base of the mast and a double organizer to make the turn into the clutches. This with a line to yank down the jib also led to the cockpit makes for good singlehanding. The winch on the mast looked impressive but wasn't very practical.

I just did it for the main halyard, main dousing line (pulls the sail back down), and a reefing line. I left the winch on the mast for the jib halyard, since I have roller furling.

Your first job is to put a mast plate under the tabernacle (the deck fitting that holds the base of the mast). The plate, which you can buy cheaply from Catalina Direct, has holes to which you attach swivel blocks to lead your lines out to "deck organizers", which are like cheek blocks that turn the lines back between the poptop and the hand rails to rope clutches or cam cleats near the cockpit. The mast plate will have to be drilled to match your tabernacle mounting holes--I had a shop do it. I have found that I don't need a winch for the main halyard--a good yank from the cockpit does fine. (But I don't race.)

If you have rope/wire halyards, this project is the time to go all rope, using one of the low-stretch lines. I replaced the masthead sheaves for lines--suspected the sheaves for wire were too narrow, but others have stayed with the originals.

You should find several threads on this forum if you search for "halyards", and some pictures on the Tech Tips section of the association's main site. One of the threads includes references to a Long Island shop, Belpat Marine, that makes the optimal sheaves.

Catalina Direct sells complete kits for this project--you can revise them any way you want for the number of lines you want to lead back. The sheaves they supply are not quite large enough in diameter, however--our Long Island source makes the correct diameter. CD's prices can be beat if you shop around for the components.

Get back to us if you can't find any of the resources I've mentioned above. It isn't a difficult project, and it's really worth it if you sail in any significant chop (or single-hand).
