Well while RRW is out of the water getting a bottom job I have been busy working on other projects as well. I just bought a Lowrance LMS-527C GPS Fish finder. I wanted something that I can play with on the boat when I am not sailing. I also wanted to keep track of my speed and track. That way I can look at it later and see how I did. I like the fishfinder for depth and a look at the bottom. The nice thing is that I can use it on the Kayak as well. I got a extra Transducer and cable. I also order a small 12V 7Amp battery for the Kayak. I will send pictures when all set up.

Don, so how do you mount it? Is it a transom mount transducer?
Waiting for pics.

Steve,

THe transducer is a transome mount. I don't wnat to put it there so I am going to mount it in the hull and shoot thourgh. I will put it at under the aft berth. I have a through hull fitting now for a Raymarine Tri-Data, but the through hull transducer cost more than the Chartplotter. So that is why I will shoot through the hull. Has anyone else done this?

Make sure you're only shooting through the outer hull and solid fiberglass and not through an inner liner or some type of core material. Toilet bowl wax works well for holding the transducer in place against the hull.

Isnt there a place in the forward area under the v berth that would work better for the thru hull mounting?

It depends on whether you want to know the depth before or after you hit.

The transducer shoots a cond down from the boat, so it really does not matter if it is front or back. I am sure if you are in shallow water you are aware of your depth. The rear section has single core and it will shoot just fine. I hope to have pics this weekend.

Don,
When I was installing my transducer I recall reading something about making sure that it was not in line (behind) your keel, for the keel would cause turbulence while underway and may effect your signal. If you do decide to mount it aft, you may want to off set it from center line.
I chose to mount mine forward in the v-berth under the water tank. I used toilet bow wax ring. That was 4 years ago, no problems yet.

Tom

Thank you for your input, that makes sense. I can place it forward as well. When you set yours how did you go about it. Just place the wax and push it down. Does the transducer touch the hull or ride on a small amount of wax. The nice thing about this method is that if it does not work you can re-do it. But if I use epoxy I am stuck, that's why I was going to use that marine goo. How did you run the wire back to the unit. By the way I am using some of your mods on my boat. Thanks for all the help.

I took the wax ring and balled it up in a ball, worked as many air bubbles out that I could and pressed it on the hull then pushed the transducer into the wax. I kept a small bit of wax between the transducer and the hull.

I ran the cable back through the bilge area, If I recall correctly the transducer wire fit through existing limber holes without any modifications. But that will depend on the diameter of the plug on the end of your wire. If it don't fit through the limber holes, don't be temped to cut your wire. Not a good idea, find another way.
