We're going to Key Largo for 5 days. July 27th thru Aug 1st.
Plan is to haul down to Key Largo (waiting slip confirmation) on Sunday July 27th. Launch from nearby ramp and tie up at slip.
Then day sail on the ocean most days, with side trips ashore to local attractions (Wynn Dixie, et. al. ) Might include an overnite anchorage away from the slip.
Pull the boat Friday Aug 1st and head for home.
The intent of this trip is to put the sails up and enjoy some sailin!
Hello Paulie, I will be working in Miami-Ft Laud the week of July 27-Aug 2, any change I could hang out. I take it you will launch at John Pennekamp. Any chance of staying over until Saturday? I would be glad to help you or tow you back home. Jesse Camp
Jesse, we're planning on launching and slipping at BlueFin Marina (lookup Rock Harbor in Key Largo, Oceanside, it's opposite Ballyhoos.). We're now launching on the Saturday as the marina's ramp is closed on sundays. So we'll launch Saturday and pull on Thursday. Sorry
If you are going to be down that way during our stay, call!
Ah, Key Largo. The farthest south I ever made on "Contention", the C-22 I owned in the 80's. Got a slip at the Condo on the east side of the Jewfish Creek bridge. Hope you guys have HUGE fun!
I should really start a new thread titled 'Tired in Key Largo'!
As planned we left home on Saturday morning heading for the Turnpike. I pulled into the service station to kick the tires. Rear passenger side tire of the trailer was nearly flat and would not take air. 15 minutes later the flat was replaced with the spare (which was new just last week!) and we were on our way. Made good time to Key Largo - Blue Fin Marina. Noticed a blimp in the front right tire when we pulled the trailer up the ramp sans Boat. Looks like another new tire is on it's way.
The folks at the Ramp also own the Tire center, so I arranged 2 new tires. While inspecting them, we found the tread coming off the front left tire, ok so it's Three new tires! The bill was $186!!! (I paid $86 last week for just one tire at Tire Kingdom!) Good deal, it paid for our dinner that night.
Great sailing on the ocean off Rodriguez Key and Taverneir key, Mosquito Banks (named, not inhabited by them!) We only spent a couple of hours on the motor over the 6 days, most of that was motoring in and out of the marina.
The Blue-fin Marina is not a modernized marina! however it has plenty to offer. The liveaboards and local RV residents are very friendly and eager to help. The owners of the marina also own the tire store, and it's obvious that Rip off is not in their vocabulary. It cost us $250 for the 5 nights at the slip which included electricity, water and cable (although our DVD/TV unit is not cable ready so we had to use our rabbit ears).
The Mandalay restaurant is literally next door to the marina, so no chance of DUI on the way back to the boat Not cheap, but good service, we only ate there once. There's a dive center and power boat rental store too.
The Blue-fin is not likely to get any stars on the marina rating except for it's simplicity. No hassle, everything worked and as I said, the folks (owners and residents) were really good to deal with and that is priceless!
Great sailing, and that's what it's all about. We'll certainly go there again. Even though it was Mini Lobster season, there were a few empty slips.
