This is not an original idea but I thought the new members would benefit from it. I am installing the new open wire steering and need better access to the aft area. So I cut the bulkhead. Now I can leave the port portion, with the electrics, and remove the starboard larger portion to gain access to the aft area. I have ordered (Sailrite) the same vinyl trim that the original bulkhead has and will trim the new edges with it.

We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.

Is there normally a removable bulkhead there, or did you have to cut? I was wondering as it might be structural. I removed the small forward, starboard bulkhead on my C-25 when I bought it because it was rotted. I discussed with Catalina Yachts first and then bolted a baluster there instead, which gives a more open feeling to the V-berth, but also provides support for the deck.

It is removable. Held on by SS wood screws. I have actually added a couple of additional screws. There is not a structural value to the bulkhead and if there were it would be vertical support which is not impacted by the cut.

Randy,

What do you have electrical wise on the back panal port side. I am installing a dual battery and will put the switch there as well as a volt meter up by the fuse panel. Just wondering what you have.

Starting on the left - the top unit is the main 30 AMP breaker connected to shore power. It then feeds the (next down) three breaker panel. One breaker goes to an outlet in the cabin. One goes to the Charles battery charger, and the other is available. At the bottom is a 12V digital Voltmeter to monitor the batteries. The big silver unit is the battery charger.

I have two Group 24 AGM batteries. Shore power connection is on the side of the coaming next to the outboard.

I am very happy with this entire setup. If you get a battery charger I recommend the Charles because it lets you use the 12V system at the same time as it is charging. Other units DO NOT allow this and that is a hassle.

Randy,

I don't have shore power right now and was not thinking of installing it at this time. If I need to take my batteries home and charge them I can. Have not had to do that yet. The outboard charges what little I use. I just wanted the dual battery set up for add protection. I like the digital voltmeter where did you get that?

You might consider making a small snap-in curtain to cover the starboard side. You could add snaps where the old screws were and attach snaps to the curtain, so you could snap it in and out when you want to get in there, it would be quick, easy access and it would look nice.

Im working on a same type of mod right now, but dividing the bulkhead into three sections. One section for electrical that stays attached (port side), one for the Battery though-hole (center and removable) and the starboard side will have two small drawers for storage. I have a tiller, so no control cables to get in the way!
No photos yet is it is in progress. Im still working on the dual battery set up as well..

RRW, that looks like a nice monitor too.

Dog, I'll just put the rest of the bulkhead back up. It is now easy to remove and I don't need to go back there oftern. An attractive curtain is a good idea though.

PDX, I look forward to seeing your drawers mod.
