I purchased a new main with slugs to make the boat easier to sail when with limited crew or single handed. Does anyone have some good advice on what to use for a sail stop (aka to keep the slides from falling out the feed groove. I have found some sail stops that defender industries sells (http://www.defender.com/expanded.jsp?path=-1|118|319697|311636|312069& id=210537

When I was entering this post yesterday, the server kept timing out. I did not realize that it had posted anything. Anyway, to continue. Using the sail stop that defender and others sell would not allow the sail to come all the way down to the boom which will make putting the sail cover on difficult. I purchased a piece of aluminum which I am planning to bend around the curve and screw in. When putting on the sail, I figure I'll back off the screws a bit.

Is there a product that does this?

thannks

I dont know if this would work on the Capri but I saw this simple solution used on a Rainbow 24 (the Annapolis Sailing School boats).

There was a small hole drilled across the channel (really 2 holes one on each side of the channel and running across the channel) going horizontally just above the "entry hole" for the slugs. There was a cotter pin that would fit into those holes. The cotter pin was attached to the mast by use of a small chain and it stayed permanently attached to the mast.

So when you wanted to drop the mainsail, you just grabbed the dangling pin and insert it into the holes and then let the sail down. The pin would prevent the slugs from popping out and coming down any further.

However this was used strictly as a "lunch" rig, if you were out sailing and wanted to drop the sails for a bit but was not useful for overnight storage because of the stacked up slugs which exposed too much sail at the mast when stored. However it was easy to pre-feed the slugs and then place the pin in if you were single-handed, at least the slugs would not come tumbling out.

I dont know if that would work as I have not considered it for mine but it might. A long cotter pin approx. 3"-4" with chain and a drill is cheap and may be effective.

For what it is worth.

I think that would be as effective as using the sail stops that defender and others sell. My plan is as follows:

- I have some 1 1/2 inch wide aluminum
- take a piece of tape the same width
- place 2 pieces of tape on both side of the slot
- on tape figure where to drill holes
- drill homes in the mast at locations determined from the tape
- tap the holes
- drill holes in the aluminum at the same locations
- screw the aluminum in
- smack the aft end of the aluminum pieces with a rubber mallet so they fit the contour of the mast
- if necessary, replace the screw holes in the aluminum with slots

does that make sense?

I don't know what kind or how many slug slots you have in a Capri, but I would assume that the size is the same in all Catalina 25 size boat masts. The items you need are called "Mast Gates". If you do a search in the C25 Tech Tips you will find some home made or if you think they will work and you want the pretty ones, you can order them from Catalina Direct. They have the distributorship for them. They were originally designed and produced by Joe Martinek a C25 owner.
I did a search of the tech tips and the info is in the tips from Snickerdoodle.

I came up with a pretty slick method of solving the problem. Not sure which would work best, I purchased a piece of 1/16 inch thick aluminum (about 1 and 1/2 inch wide) and a piece of 1/16 in thick aluminum angle iron (1 1/4 inch wide).

When at the boat, it was clear the angle iron was the way to go. I cut two pieces of angle iron a bit longer than the gate way (one for port and one for starboard sides of the mast. Held them in place with duct tape so that the inboard side of each was directly on the groove (thereby covering the opening, leaving a track the width of the slot above and below the gateway). I then drilled 3 holes on each side (2 would have been enough), removed the duct tape, tapped the holes in the mast, drilled the holes in the aluminum a bit larger and drilled a slot.

I then hit the holes and edges with a grinder and the thing is pretty slick, put the pieces on, screwed in tight and banged them with a rubber mallet (to get the contour of the mast).

When I want to use my cruising main (with slugs), I open the gate by backing off on the screws and opening it ut, put the sail on, close the gate and screw it tight. the main comes all the way down to the boom. Whole project took 35 minutes and cost $15. Problem solved.
