We had an interesting race last Friday evening - the start of our "Patriot" series - one race each Friday for 4 weeks with one throwout. I helmed a friend's Precision 23 with the owner and another friend as crew. We ran a full main and a roller-furling 155. The wind started at about 15k with many gusts, and gradually increased to 18 -20k. At one point around the leeward mark I saw 24 on the anenometer. The boat was a joy to sail up to 18k - after that it got increasingly hairy! Even for Canyon Lake the wind was very shifty and gusty - on one tack to the weather mark we actually sailed a zig-zag without tacking! We won the race so I guess I'm getting used to high winds and we've sure had enough of them this year. The next day we raced This Side Up in the Summer Series at the other Club - it only blew 12 - 15k (with the usual gusts) so it was quite a pleasure!

Sounds like you had a good time Derek, racing in strong winds is fun. I'm still waiting on my new mainsail and my old main is now blown out, with the slugs tearing out of the luff. Anyway, I've had to decline offers to race the Friday beer can races at Austin Yacht Club because of that. I'm hoping to have the new main this week and get out on the water again.
