Does anyone know the proper length for the screws that hold the mast plate to the cabin top? I've dropped my mast to install new shrouds and decided to install a mast step halyard plate under the yoke. I was surprised when I found that the screws were only 1 1/2 inches long. I had assumed that the screws went through the cabin top and into the wooden mast support below.
Has a previous owner of my boat replaced the original screws with ones that are too short? or are they designed to just go into the cabin top and not through it?
I had two small lag screws that went a little bit into the compression post, and two bolts that were fastened barely forward of the post (almost too close for small washers and nuts). All you're looking for there is to prevent lateral movement--you're not concerned with upward pull. The rig is pushing down pretty hard. If you know the screws will go into the compression post, you could lengthen them a little, but I don't think it's necessary. Make sure you bed everything thoroughly, just as you no doubt found that Catalina did with their brown gunk.
