Ron on Orion 25 sk sr trad int. Perhaps someone can advise a computer challenged geezer. When I wish to look back at archived messages for advice, as on keel bolts, or biminis, I use the "search" feature. The previous posts come up for viewing, but only three or four lines of the posts, leaving me usually just at the point where the critical info is found. Sometimes the posts that appear are repeated three or four times (abbreviated, as usual). I am sure there is something I should be doing that would allow viewing of the complete posts, but---what? Advice is sought for...Ron in SW FL, a recent C25 buyer.

Ron,

Welcome Aboard! It appears that when the "Archived Posts" box is checked on the search page, the topics that are found do indeed come up abbreviated. Try doing a search with the "Archived Posts" box unchecked.

It only seemed to search and retrieve the General and C-25 posts back about 6 months, and the Swap Meet back about 10 months, but what it did pull up was complete as originally posted.

I don't like to criticize, but not being able to retrieve really old threads doesn't strike me as a desirable feature of this software. It's one thing for the current denizens to repeatedly answer the same reoccuring questions. However, the wisdom of former or much less frequent contributors is lost to the sands of time. Remember the vast technical knowledge of Dave Laux for instance? Gone.

Are we still doing something wrong? Is there a setting in the BBS software that can be changed to improve this? Or are we stuck with the way it acts now? Should we individually start archiving really well written or usefull posts on our home hard drives for later reposting if the topic should reoccur? Maybe create and offer for sale an annual CD-ROM of the year's BBS activity and latest tech tips in a searchable format?

Leon,

Searching this site should give you access to all posts since we began using this software in September 2001. Prior to mid-September 2001, forum posts resided on Todd Johnson's Trailer Sailor server. And, a few years prior to that, the assocation had its own server (like now) using yet another forum script.

For quite some time, Todd left our old messages on his server. I just checked and they are no longer there. As you know, he no longer actively participates in his Trailer Sailor site. The reason we moved our forums to our own server last year was because Todd planned to pull the plug on the TSBB. He told to me find an alternative, and I did. He didn't end up pulling the plug . . . but he could at any time. We decided (as an association) to not take the risk. Losing the old posts on his server was the compromise we made.

I have an unrelated problem with forum.

I often can get the latest post on the threads. The most recent activty will show, but when I try to read it I can't find it. Am I doing something wrong or is there a work around?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you are wondering about the best way to find new posts, the easiest way I've found is to click on "Active Topics" at the top right corner of the page. After you click on "Active Topics," you'll get a list of all the most recent posts in all the different forums. You can also elect to see the posts since you last signed on, or those posted in the last hour, or those posted since yesterday, etc. etc. ... I usually just keep my setting at "topics since your last visit."

'Hope that helps.
