Maybe you will find this dull, but since I send out a race report to crew memembers every week I thought I'd share one with you'all. Maybe it'll catch on and I can read yours?
Wind was light in the marina where we had fit the #1 headsail, although one of us had suspicions about the wind increasing out on the sound. The course was OBOMB. Jim skippered while Josh trimmed and Claire distracted the competition with her beauty.
We waited as long as possible to raise the headsail, wondering if we should reduce based on a hunch that wind would increase (it was blowing at 10-15kts). We timed our start well and crossed 3rd, with Lady Bugs square in front of us and Bingo way down below but in front of us. We nearly scraped gel coat off Lady Bug's transom as we dropped under her rather than going above on account of the fact that she has a shoal keel and can go up the beach higher. When we reached the end of the river the wind went from ~12kts to ~22kts, the hunch was right and we were overpowered... but so was everyone else! We sailed the course without a flaw and were feeling pretty sly tacking on top of The Gift, just infront of B, until we straightened out and realized we would need to pinch to the mark which was only 30 yds away.
As we were blinded and overpowered by too much headsail and were pinching like mad, I ducked down to call out the mark to Jim. Instantly I realized if we were going to make it, it would take a miracle. Jim pinched up a bit more and I watched as the headsail came within 2 inches of the buoy! The close-call also served to distract our competition, as The Gift all but stopped to watch us escape death by a fraction of an inch!
Upon the final rounding of B we passed Lady Bugs for good and broad-reached to the finish in the river. We watched our speed go up to hull speed and shaved a little time off the leaders who were all sailing slower (wing and wing). Once back in the river we sailed on a beam reach, while the sun was setting over Whidbey Island, ending a beautiful evening on Possesion Sound. While it appeared that we crossed 3rd or maybe 4th, it turns out that we finished 6th (out of ten)! But the important thing is that we had a great time... and that we beat 4 other boats (Lady Bugs being one of them).
