I believe its called "a tarp"...

While thumbing through "The Finely Fitted Yacht" by Ferenc Mate I saw some interesting ideas, not the least of which was the cockpit tent made from a normal poly tarp, boathook, and reaching pole. Filed it into my "things to remeber file, and waited for opportunity to knock.

Opportunity knocked last night. Chuck (11yr old daughter) is in sailing school this week, and so we are living at the marina and cheering her on. On the way to the boat after work last night, torrential rain kicked in. I had images of wife, child and baby huddled in the boat shivering. When I got to the marina, they had rigged a small tarp in the standard "throw it over the boom and attach the corners with bungee cord" style.

I put out a larger tarp, set so its long axis followed the centreline of the boat, laid the whisker pole across the front of it and attached at the corners. Similarly, I put the boathook across in the middle of the tarp. I attached the girls' smaller tarp to the front of the setup to provide extra protection, and we had an amazing amount of dry space in the cockpit with full protection from the rain, right down to the coamings.

We have a couple of old canvas tents in the yard. I may make a cockpit tent out of them with pockets to hold the poles in place. If I feel especially adventurous, I foresee zippered side sections which can be removed in fair weather. The creative juices are flowing...

I'll try to get some pics tonight.

I just bought this from mesamps. It looks like it's never been used and is in perfect condition. It came with a snap-on side curtain that keeps the sun out of the cockpit but allows some air flow. I haven't had a chance to put it up yet due to vacations and tropical storms.

I could try and get some pictures this weekend of it setup if it would help.

For what its worth, I picked up a very beautiful custom boom tent earlier this season in Sunbrella Fabric from Defender.

I drew a sketch with dimensions using a Word document, and emailed the sketch along with my acct info to their Canvas Team and called them up the next day. They could not have been nicer or more accommodating.

My design was 8' x 10', but it could have been any size. I use it to cover the poptop and windows to keep the rain out, so I requested 8 grommets (corners and middles) and indicated the cutout for the mast, and two weeks and $250 later, I had my cover. I use short bungies to keep it in place.

I got the idea from using an 8x10 blue poly tarp that I modified with a scissors and my grommet tool just after I launched her this May.

I think the tarp that Prospector described was a lot longer to cover the entire length of the cockpit, as well as wider to cover the cockpit out to both coamings.

Here's a picture of the cover in place

And the color matches the rest of the boat.

Oh yes, my 87 year old father in law, Bert, made the steps. Invaluable!
