I have a 1984 Catalina 25, and I am getting quite a bit of chalking topsides. Also getting mildew on the white freeboard. What can be done to control or reduce?

wash with a good boat soap or even pressure was the hull. Clean and wax with 3M fiberglass restorer/polish.

There is a wonderful product out there called Starbrite Deck Cleaner. It can be picked up at most marine stores for about $6.00. Easy to use and can clean up your boat in about a half hour's time (probably less)

Takes care of the chalking and any mildew (around the northwest we have the problem of green slime growing in our boats after a winter's worth of drizzle).

Second the 3M Restorer.... for the hull and cabin sides--not the deck or seat tops. Another approach that I tried on my hull at the beginning of this season is to scrub down and then apply multiple coats of Poli Glow, which wipes on and dries to a shine (increasingly as you add coats)--like the polymer-based floor polishes (which it may be, for all I know). It has looked great all season--almost like new fiberglass. (Well, maybe not THAT good...) Next Spring I'll have a better assessment of whether it's really a superior solution. I bought it at a boat show (based on some recommendations), and their site is www.poliglowproducts.com.
