the only opening I have in the fordeck in front of the light, is the ancor locker ... ???? Picture would be nice, something previous owner must have done ???

Hopefully, you can now see the "thingy". It was original according to the PO. It's a 1985 Standard Rig, Fin Keel.
The thing you see is screwed in.
CD have a Cowl Vent that I did order but it seemed like a sure-fire way to let rain/spray into the vee berth so I returned it.
I think Frank's right -- that's where I put my Nicro solar vent. Since I installed mine, I've been through some pretty nasty storms and seas with nary a leak. It will help reduce the mildrew down below.

It looks like you just have a cover plate screwed on there right now. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
It measures about 2.75 inches and consequently is completely non-standard. It is covered with a piece of vinyl which is deteriorating and will soon be punctured.
What is the best method to enlarge a hole on the foredeck to allow for "standard" size fixtures.
Hi, Not sure it was original from Catalina... It look like it was drilled after for a vent. By the picture, it look like the plastic ring that goes inside hte boat of the Nicrovent. Best thing I think would be to buy a new vent, with the next up sized diameter, and recut the opening with jig saw, as mentioned by others. It will help a lot for condensation in Vberth.

Three inch cowl vent.
You would probably have to use a jig saw to enlarge the hole since no center is available for a drill mounted hole saw. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
How does one stop splintering on the interior liner when cutting with a jig saw? Masking tape?

If you're using a hole saw to enlarge an existing hole, simply make or buy a wood plug to jam into the hole. This will facilitate centering of the larger hole saw.
Does anybody have the link for the Nicro solar vent? I have a pretty musty smell whenever I first open the boat, which dissipates after a little while. I believe some air circulation would prevent or reduce the smell.
As far as I can tell, the source of the smell seems the bottom of the bilge, right where the keel is attached. I know this because whenever I open a drawer or cabinet door, the smell is apparent.
As I don't see any leaks down there, I believe the water comes in from the rain, as its always a wee bit damp. I wipe the area frequently with paper towels, nonetheless, there's always a few ounces of water down below.
Other than the vent, any other suggestions would be appreciated.
The solar vent is your answer. I bought one that I was going to install--was trying to find the right hole saw for less than a paycheck, and was undecided between the head and the forward hatch... then sold Passage and put the vent into Sarge--works great!
When I bought my boat, I noticed it also had a cover on a hole in the deck. This was up forward in the main cabin area. I took measurements of it and it seemed to be same dimension as the Nicro Vent products. I purchased a solar vent from WM, popped off the cover and replaced it with the solar vent - perfect fit. has been working fine for almost 3 years now.
This link should get you to some of the WM Nicro vents that they sell. I would also check with Defender.com and possibly some other companies, however, the benefit of going with WM is that if the vent does not fit, it is easy enough to bring it back to the store versus shipping back a product.

most guys are going with Torpedoes these days. The deck cannon makes a C25 top heavy and anything over .30 cal impedes tacking. With torpedoes you can store them below or in the dumpster, plus you don't have to send the kids forward to fire the thing. Inspired by Frank H's install, I can fire my torpedos from the cockpit. All lines led aft, all firing controls aft.
As for that Nicro hole, I've got a 4" nicro hole that has a cover. The cover lets a little bit of light into the interior just where I need it - mine is located Ibetween the accordian doors in the head.

Why go with a cannon when you can launch Surface to Air Missiles from there?
The problem is with the ideal location for Silo #2. I suggest directly over the head.
