We're home now after a great trip to San Diego. For those who have never been or haven't been in a while, it is worth a look. The town was clean and had a safe feeling walking around, even at night. The main thing was the water front!!! What a beautiful place! The water was clean and there were boats everywhere. We saw small inflatables and at the other end was the aircraft carrier, Nimitz. ( not sure if that's spelled right ) Our hotel was at the marina where Jerry Lewis keeps his boat along with other celebrities. The business part of our trip was good but the highlight was hooking up with Jim Baumgart, past Commodore and future Commodore the way things look.
What a treat!!! The people we have met or talked to since joining this assoc have all been a true pleasure and Jim took things to the next level. Jim showed us Roy Disney's Mega boat, Pywaket, ( I think that's close) WOW that's a nice boat. After that treat and some local info it was on to the boat. Jim had everything close to ready so it wasn't long before we were headed for the Pacific. This was our first time sailing on a C25. (we still don't have ours in the water yet) Jim showed us that we made the right choice. We were in some pretty big wind with a lot of sail out and the boat handled great. Jim has his boat set up so well, it really handled great. Jim took us down the coast and back, a total of 7 or 8 hours of non stop sailing. He even let this lake boater drive a lot!!! Hope we weren't to much trouble. Jim really was the perfect host! If your ever in the area, give Jim a call, he is a really great ambassador for our assoc. Thanks again Jim, we're looking forward to your visit.
It was a lot of fun taking you out. You are going to be in a very unique position - comparing a boat prepared and sailed by me with one prepared and sailed by Frank Hopper!
I think you learned that these are pretty capable ocean boats, if a bit rolly and uncomforatable at times down wind in a cross sea (but what boat isn't)?
We had nice winds above 15 knots most of the day, bumpy seas 2 to 4 sometime bigger (at short period) and down there in San Diego Bay in what I call Hurricane Alley we had winds way in excess of 20 maybe 25 knots.
Oh yeah - remember - any Member visiting San Diego, just call or email and I'll take you out sailing, but come prepared if you are a lake sailor!
It would be cool to visit San Diago: while I was studying at the Open University in the UK during my navy days, I had to learn UCSD Pascal remotely, it was the lead in to my current career.
Perhaps Peggy can find a nurses seminar out your way and we could add our names to your crew list. That's if Peggy doesn't go and retire on me, as that could mean a bigger boat
