As a rule, when I'm out daysailing, I never sail farther than my fuel supply. If I have 4 hours of fuel, I'll only sail 4 hours out. You never know when the wind will cease or when something in the rigging will let go. When cruising, I estimate the amount of fuel needed, then double it.
Don, that is an excellent rule that I have slacked off on . I have a 3 gallon tank for local sailing and have let it get half empty or less. I will stay on top of that and fill just above or at halfway. I would rather not make a call for a tow. Steve A
You're probably right. I generally run my '88 9.9 Evinrude at around 5.5 to 6 knots. I was estimating based on a 30 mile motor I made three years ago. I haven't been on an extended cruise since then. I don't even have my boat in the water this year.At any rate, I'm confident that I have enough fuel on board to get me to the nearest safe haven in an emergency. These are generally 20 to 30 miles apart on Lake Superior and the Great Lakes in general.

Don, Ya I am about 50(Lesson learned)-50(Lesson heard). Steve A
