While I'm sure this topic has been visited in the past I think it would be of interest to many at this time of the year. In another month my hull will be dry and I'm thinking of sending the sails out for cleaning and evaluation/repair. I know of Sailcare in Western PA. Does anyone have good recommendations. While I'd love to find a place within 2 or so hours of Philadelphiat that I could drive to I may need to ship the sails to get the good combination of price/quality. I can make it to the Annapolis area and am often in that part of the country.
Joe, Sailcare does a very good cleaning and re-resining job but I know when I sent them my sail for cleaning they also tried to sell me additional services they felt I needed to the tune of about $300. They wanted to replace the C-25 logo and sail numbers as they felt their cleaning process would pull it off. The stitched on logo and numbers were fine and still are. They also had several other things they wanted to do which didn't make much sense as the sail is a lower priced original sail and for the money involved I would have been well on my way to the cost of a new sail. I finally agreed to let them replace the bolt rope which they felt would cause problems as I raised the main. When I got it back I noticed one of the batten sleeves had a small hole wore in it which I patched myself. Their inspection missed that. If you send it, or take it in, for repairs I would do my own evaluation first and then listen to them. I felt their inspection was largely an effort to sell me additional services, which I understand is their business. I would still use them again and don't want to sound like they are an unreputable lot. Just have an idea of what you need before you contract for services with anyone.
Joe, Thanks for the heads up. Right now I'm considering using them although I hope to get some more info on this site in the days ahead. My boat gets pulled 10/15 at the earliest and hopefully it will take them a week longer to get to me so I do have some time. There are a few places in MD that have been around forever and are close enough to drive to but it seems everything in the the Chesapeake area costs lots more than anywhere else in the country with the exception of San Fran.
I used Sailcare for my O'Day sails a couple of years ago. They came back looking new. While I didn't get the "sales pitch" feeling that Joe describes, they did an inspection before cleaning and recommended a few (very few) needed repairs. I agree that it's prudent to measure the cost of their recommendations against the cost of comparable new sails.
