Hello all,

I am relativey new to sailing (about a year) and purchased a Catalina 25 this past March. I love the boat and we enjoy sailing on her about once a week. Anyway, she came with a spinnaker, but I have no idea how to rig it. Does anyone have a manual for rigging a spinnaker on a 1984 Catalina 25?

Thanks for your help!

Find out who is racing in your marina, ask them to help you with it. There are many ways to fly a chute depending on the geometry of the chute and the hardware you have on your boat. An on boat analysis by a neighbor racer it the best solution. Then ask to crew. The best way to learn to fly a chute is to do it on a boat where it is done often.

There are some really nice photos of my boat under spin here

http://www.indiscipline.org/cat25/spinshots.html

You need a foreguy, pole lift, track on the mast, spin halyard, spin sheets, aft spin blocks. Spinnaker winches are nice but you can use your genny winches.

The spin should be hoisted out of your turtle bag while wedged in the pulpit forward of the forestay and genny.

You can sail with apparant wind just forward of the beam to dead aft. You'll be good in winds of about 5 to 15 knots, but over 15 either get it down or make sure you are headed deep downwind.

Douse is best to take the sail right into the cabin, run the tapes, and re-bag it. Always keep the corners tied together and on top of the pile stuffed in the turtle bag.

It takes a lot of practice and I crewed on a big race boat for a year doing foredeck, mast, pit, and trimming to learn how to do it all. The good thing is that spin race boats always need crew so Frank's advice is sound.

Chris,

Welcome to the Forum.

JimB and Frank gave sound advice. To get up to speed on the jargon, so you can ask good questions of local racers and cruisers, you could read through some of UK-Halsey Encyclopedia of Sails.

I have an asymm with a sock and use it for cruising only, with no spin pole or pole rigging, for example.

Where do you sail? Puget Sound?

Thanks John,

I sail on Puget Sound mostly near Bainbridge Island, Blake Island and, of course, Poulsbo. We look forward to our first cruise of the San Juans, probably next summer.

Thanks also, for the link. I will definitely take a look.

Chris
