Has anybody replaced an original swing keel winch with the new one from Catalina Direct? I've bolted in the new winch, but the old handle doesn't fit the new winch. They say you need to take the old winch post fitting out of the old winch and put it on the new winch.
With great effort, I have extraced the old fitting. But I don't see exactly how it fits the new winch. The old fitting had a brake plate on it that was inside the winch box. The new winch has a shaft with three bolts on it. Will the old fitting just screw onto the new shaft? I'd try it, but the boat is 20 miles away.
Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new handle with winch fitting attached?
Thanks,

I replaced mine last year and had to buy a new handle and fitting. Here is a thread I created last year: http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15549& SearchTerms=winch, handle I completely disassembled my old winch trying to see if I could remove the old adapter, but I don't think it is possible.
Here's how I removed the old adapter. The adapter is screwed onto a shaft with a gear on it. You need to take the spring clip off the other end of the shaft, unscrew the adapter from the shaft, and push the shaft out the other end of the box, so that the adapter can be pushed down and out. It won't come out the top because there is a big plate underneath.
It took two hours to get the old adapter out. However, I don't think it will fit the new winch.
Winch replacement is one of the bigger winter projects for us. The current winch is the original, and while the drum is good, it's a real bear to operate. I'm hoping a new winch will work better. How has your experiences been once the new winch was operational?
I replaced the winch and decided to save the $50 on a handle by reusing the old one. Bad idea. The crew was not very happy with the captain on our next trip out when we couldn't lower the keel... So I ended up forking over the $ for a new handle. One note on the new handle, make sure the periodically check the allen screws on the nut, because they have a tendency to work loose and can strip the threads.
