You may recall I did the "Crew of Two Around Catalina" race in 2006. It is held out of Newport, not San Diego. There is a cruising class and you don't even need to be a member of PHRF or a yacht club. http://www.indiscipline.org/cat25/crewoftwo.html
Very common to have "zonies" here on L dock. You'd be more than welcome. Come on down and crew with me some weekend. You can stay in a nearby hotel from $50 to $200/night. Or bring your boat, we'll help you rig and launch.
Also, that list I provided of races does not show the San Diego All Catalina Association races, we have 1 per month, I almost always need crew.
