I want to thank all of you for replying.

I ended up not buying the boat but appreciate all the imput. So, I am on the search for another boat.

This forum is a wonderful resource with so many knowledgable people contributing. I have been reading the different posts and replies since last spring when I first started my boat search.

I'm considering a purchase of a 1981 Catalina 25. The surveryor had checked out the boat today and was concerned with the undulating of the cabin floor.

As you step down into the cabin, on the port side, the floor dips in. Also, forward in the cabin the floor has another gradual dip. No stress cracks or delaminating were seen.

I questioned the broker about the same thing when I was looking over the boat. The broker said that was the way the boat was constructed.

Is/was this the intended design of the 1981 Catalina or a flaw in the boat I'm looking at?

This will be my first boat and I appreciate your expertise.

Linda,

My '83 Cat has the dip to port in the stove area. Forward there is a step down area in the head chamber. These are not defects, Catalina designed them that way. What you should be concerned with is any springyness in the cabin floor. There shouldn't be any.

Thank you for the reply, Val.

That's exactly where the dip in this boat is. The surveyor has not seen this on the Catalina 27' or 30' and didn't know if it was common on the 25'and thought it was odd to be in the design.

Thanks for confirming that it's just the way the floor is.

Hi linda

welcome to the group, as i did you will gain much insight from the many knowledgable people here.

as Val stated the dips you speak of are norm for the catalina, my boat 1984 SK has (2) access covers and (2)screwed down ports that allow visual inspection under the floor

Val is correct Linda. Catalina tried to give the C25 a bit more head room in the galley and for moving forward in the boat. The floor was originally designed with the dinette interior in mind. Then copied for the traditional interior. The last few years of production saw a change to a single level floor.

Bill - thanks for solving a 10 year old mystery! I always wondered why there was that dumb jog in the cabin sole on my traditional interior!

...probably because during the last few years, the swing was eliminated and no extra height was needed for the trunk. Just about when they got it right, they quit!
